Toddlers can surf better than ride a bike

Young children are able to master technology more quickly than basic skills such as riding a bike or tying their shoelaces. This insight emerges from an international study conducted by security company AVG among 2 200 mothers of toddlers aged between 2 and 5. The mums were asked to indicate the skills of their children from a list that included both technical and basic skills.

The survey shows that 69% of kids are able to use a computer. In fact, their tech skills are often better developed than their basic skills. For example, more children between the ages of 2 and 3 can play a simple computer game (44%) than ride a bike (43%).
It also appears that children aged between 2 and 5 are better at playing with a smartphone app (19%) than typing their shoelaces (9%). This age group is also better at opening a web browser (25%) than swimming on their own (20%).

Make your child aware of the dangers lurking online

According to researcher, Lloyd Borrett, these results clearly show that parents cannot begin early enough with teaching their children about the dangers of going online. “The world is probably no more dangerous than it was 20 years ago, but the Internet has brought those dangers closer to home. Your child may well know not to open the door to a stranger, but have you also taught him or her how to fend off the same stranger on a computer screen?” asks Borrett.
